RUBBER & PLASTICS NEWS ANNOUNCES INTERNATIONAL TIRE EXHIBITION AND CONFERENCE

Event Marks 1st Global Gathering of Tire Industry With Both a Conference
and Exhibition Focusing on Manufacturing, Technology and Marketing
AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Rubber & Plastics News, a Crain Communications Inc. publication, announces the formation of the International Tire Exhibition and Conference (ITEC) in Akron, on Sept. 20-22, 1994. This conference and exhibition in Akron, the "birthplace of the U.S. tire industry," is the first comprehensive forum to offer cutting-edge knowledge, expertise and understanding in the many technical and business areas of today's global tire market. The new John S. Knight Convention Center in downtown Akron, scheduled for completion in June 1994, is ITEC's meeting site.
ITEC's purpose is to expand delegates' knowledge in the technology, manufacturing and marketing of the tire. Delegates will interact during three information-packed days with sessions in each of these three key areas.
Robert S. Simmons, publisher of Rubber & Plastics News, is pleased Crain can provide the conference at such a critical point in the revitalization of the worldwide $50 billion plus tire industry. "The tire industry is a very competitive market," Simmons said, "especially in the market economy of today. It is our hope that ITEC will be a catalyst to spur worldwide innovation for the tire industry's future. We welcome industry professionals from around the world to attend this comprehensive global tire forum."
ITEC's conference includes lectures from industry experts and distinguished keynote speakers from around the world. Specific conference speakers have been asked to develop over 60 world-class presentations. The conference focus is on: energy conservation in both manufacturing and product performance, new materials for complex design and manufacturing concepts, new testing concepts, new product performance criteria, product liability, air pollution, tire failure analysis, special brand marketing, risk management considerations and government regulation.
Company exhibits will feature the latest technology and concepts in all phases and types of tires and their production. Exhibitors, suppliers to the tire industry, will show tire manufacturing and testing machinery, instrumentation, polymers and chemicals.
ITEC is an event full of possibilities for economic development in Akron and Northeast Ohio. ITEC will be the first chance for some European and Asian tire and polymer companies to visit Akron and explore its investment potentials. As the White House clears the way for the opening of new trade agreements, as trade restrictions and tariff reductions with Asia are eased, and with the groundwork for NAFTA poised before Congress, ITEC promotes new economic expansion -- foreign investment, jobs, import/export agreements, international investment -- to the tire and polymer industries of Ohio. ITEC will also be a catalyst to stimulate foreign investment for U.S. tire companies.
Harold Herzlich, technical editor for Crain's Rubber & Plastics News and a consultant and former director of tire engineering at Pirelli Armstrong Tire Corp., is the chairman of the ITEC technical and business conference. A 35-year veteran of the rubber industry, Herzlich started his career at Goodyear in production and process development and joined Armstrong Rubber Co. in 1958 as a product compounder. He became director of tire engineering in 1985. He was chairman of the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society in 1982. Herzlich now operates his own consulting firm, Herzlich Consulting, Inc.
ITEC is sponsored by Rubber & Plastics News, a Crain Communications Inc. publication. Crain Communications Inc. is based in Chicago and produces business, trade, and consumer publications. The company has more than 900 employees located in 15 offices in the United States, England, Germany, and Japan. It is one of the largest privately-held publishing firms in the U.S.
