RTNA HONORS 1992'S BEST BROADCAST REPORTING AT 43RD ANNUAL 'GOLDEN MIKES' AWARDS, JAN. 9

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Southland broadcasters compete for top honors in 56 categories Saturday night, Jan. 9, at the Beverly Hilton, as the Radio & Television News Association (RTNA) of Southern California hosts its 43rd annual Golden Mikes awards.
"This year will mark several firsts' in our Golden Mikes program," said Milli Martinez, RTNA president.
"First, we're increasing our two annual student scholarships to $1,500 each. Secondly, for what we hope will be a one-time award, we're honoring the Best Riot Coverage in TV."
Martinez said another first is an RTNA program directory. The 32-page bound book includes a directory of news and business agencies, as well as an "FYI" information section, listing names and phone numbers of organizations on subjects ranging from literacy and health care, to women's issues.
"The directory will not only be a handsome souvenir, but a handy resource for working journalists and public relations professionals," she said. "And, directory ad sales will be used to endow a permanent scholarship fund."
Still another first is that representatives from all television and radio stations involved will present awards to their peers.
A special award will be given to KABC TV's engineer Scott Shulman, for serving as technical consultant for news pools covering such events as the Rodney King trial, the Robert Alton Harris execution and the installation of Los Angeles Police Chief Willie Williams.
Entertainment will be provided by the Pasadena Young Musicians Orchestra String Quartet. Tables and seats ($750 and $75 each, respectively) must be reserved by calling Carolyn Fox at 818-986-8168.
The event, held in the Beverly Hilton Grand Ballroom, 9876 Wilshire Blvd., starts with a no-host reception at 6 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. dinner and program.
