RTN to Initiate World's First MPEG-4 AVC-Based Standard Definition Satellite TV Service with Island Media, NEOTION and Harmonic.
NEOTION, a technology leader developing products and services for the digital television market, and Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT), a leading provider of digital video, broadband optical networking and IP delivery systems, have been chosen by Island Media to enable its customer Racetrack Television Network (RTN) to migrate to MPEG-4-AVC. This is expected to result in the world's first MPEG-4 AVC-based standard definition (SD) satellite TV service. Using this powerful technology, RTN will be able to significantly increase its channel count and add new services, thereby growing its market potential.
RTN, an affiliate of Las Vegas, Nevada-based Roberts Communications Network, Inc., plans to expand to 60 the number of channels broadcast by satellite and add new services. This project, which is being made easier as a result of Harmonic's experience migrating other broadcast services to MPEG-4 AVC and the versatility of its DiviCom MV 100 encoding platform, will be completed by the end of the year. "RTN is reinforcing its leadership position in the at-home racetrack simulcast market by developing new services and complete racing content for its subscribers. NEOTION MPEG-4 modules will allow our customers to easily receive RTN MPEG-4 channels by simply inserting the TV module in the industry-standard slot of their satellite receivers. This is an excellent combination with our Harmonic DiviCom MV 100 encoders, providing high-quality, ultra-low bit-rate video to our customers," says Todd Roberts, President of RTN.
NEOTION's revolutionary MPEG-4 TV modules enable viewers to easily have access to MPEG-4 TV channels along with optional hybrid connectivity for IP-TV, Video on Demand and other IP-based interactive services.
"We are really excited about this strategic project which will lead us to supply our cutting-edge MPEG-4 TV modules to the RTN subscriber network. This collaboration is extremely important to us as it provides us with a significant foothold into the US market," says Jean-Yves Le Roux, President and Founder of NEOTION.
"Advanced compression technologies offer satellite TV providers, such as RTN, the promise of more revenue-generating services within their existing bandwidth," said Jean-Christophe Morizur, Director of Product Marketing for the Convergent Systems Division of Harmonic Inc. "Harmonic's DiviCom MV 100, which is the industry's most widely deployed advanced codec-enabled standard definition compression platform, fully delivers on that promise by allowing RTN to seamlessly migrate from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 and, at the same time, greatly increase the channel capacity of its existing network."
