RTD READY FOR 'SUPER SERVICE WEEKEND' WITH RED LINE START AND SUPER BOWL SERVICE

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The RTD is ready to open the Red Line and carry thousands of expected passengers for free on the subway, as well as operate 120 special buses to the Rose Bowl, the NFL Experience and the Super Bowl, announced Alan F. Pegg, RTD general manager.
"This indeed is a special, super-service weekend for the RTD," said Pegg. "We are ready to operate the Red Line trains and are ready to transport thousands of sports enthusiasts to the Rose Bowl on both Saturday and Sunday."
Pegg noted that final preparations are complete for the Red Line opening to the public on Saturday at 1 p.m. The public will be allowed to board at the five stations, following a special dignitary train ride for hundreds of special guests responsible for the planning, funding development and construction of the subway.
Pegg said that the public who come to ride the subway will be asked to queue up at station entrances to avoid overcrowding on the mezzanine and train-level boarding areas.
The district has an extensive, well-coordinated crowd-control plan that will assure the safety of the public, and ensure that as many people who wish to sample the service may do so either on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m., until 5 p.m., or on Sunday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
"In the final days before service is opened to the public, RTD personnel are involved in an intense level of activity, so that we are ready to operate and manage a successful start of the Red Line," said Pegg.
"We believe that all necessary actions have been taken and that we can confidently expect a safe and reliable opening of L.A.'s newest transportation system."
RTD also is operating three special bus lines to the Rose Bowl that will include a line from downtown Los Angeles to the Rose Bowl, plus two shuttle lines in Pasadena to accommodate football fans attending Super Bowl events this weekend.
Line 627 will operate on Sunday, along Figueroa and First streets, with frequent service from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The fare will be $3.50 each way.
On Saturday and Sunday, Line 680 will operate shuttle service between downtownunday hours will be 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the round-trip ticket will be $2.20.
On Sunday only, Line 670 will operate shuttle service between Oak Grove Park and the Rose Bowl from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oak Grove Park, which has a large parking area, is northwest of the Rose Bowl and east of the I-210 Foothill Freeway.
"This will indeed be a super weekend for the RTD, not only with the opening of the region's first modern subway system, but with transporting thousands of fans to the Super Bowl," said Pegg. "We hope everyone will enjoy a super transit weekend."
