RTA LOWERING FARES ON WEEKENDS DURING AUGUST, INTRODUCING SPECIAL SEPTEMBER DISCOUNTS

CLEVELAND, July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will cut fares by as much as 50 percent on weekends in August and reduce the price of monthly and weekly passes by 25 percent in September.
RTA General Manager Ronald J. Tober made the announcement today at the board of trustees meeting.
From July 30 through Aug. 29, RTA will reduce its weekend fares to 75 cents on all buses and trains. The special rate will be in effect from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday during each weekend in August. Senior citizen fares will be reduced from 50 cents to 35 cents during the same time periods.
"We're giving Greater Clevelanders an opportunity to try RTA at a reduced fare. For any baseball games or other summer events, we're making travel more economical and convenient," said Tober.
"During August, because more people take vacations, we obviously have extra seating capacity. We think by lowering fares we can fill some of those seats. This is a good opportunity to offer rides at a substantial discount," Tober said.
In addition, trains will run until midnight on all Friday and Saturday nights in August and on any evening during special events, baseball and football games through Oct. 3.
RTA's plan to offer extra discounts on monthly and weekly passes in September also promises to increase ridership, Tober said. "We think offering bigger discounts when people are going back to work or school will help boost our ridership. Since weekly and monthly passes are good for an unlimited number of rides, these deep discounts may be an incentive to use RTA for back-to-school shopping trips, outings, or an easy ride to movies and events," Tober said.
The current and the new, 25-percent-discounted, monthly pass fares are as follows:
 Current September Discount
 Monthly Express: $54.00 $40.50
 Monthly Local: $45.00 $33.75
 Weekly Express: $13.50 $10.00
 Weekly Local: $11.25 $ 8.50
