RTA BOARD GIVES GREEN LIGHT TO BUILD RTA WALKWAY TO GATEWAY

CLEVELAND, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of trustees of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) today authorized a contract with National Engineering & Contracting Co. for the construction of the RTA Passenger Accessway connecting RTA's Tower City Rapid Station to the Gateway Arena.
The 1,050-foot accessway will connect Tower City Center near the food court with the Gateway Arena via a walkway to be suspended under the Huron Road Bridge.
RTA passengers will be able to walk from the Tower City Rapid Station to games and events at Gateway without going outdoors. The climate controlled, glass and steel walkway overlooks the Flats and the Cuyahoga River and bridges the Gateway parking lot and RTA's own rapid transit tracks before entering a 100-foot tunnel under Ontario. Once inside Gateway, stairs, an elevator or an escalator can be used to enter the Arena lobby, one and one-half stories up.
The RTA walkway is part of RTA's intermodal hub plans, a component of the RTA Transit 2010 Long Range Plan. It will be built through a partnership between Tower City and Gateway Corporation.
RTA expects to begin construction by the end of the month and will complete the walkway in time for the Indian's home opening game in April, 1994.
Traffic on Ontario will be reduced from seven lanes to five for the first five months of the project.
The construction cost is $7,745,000 and is 97 percent federally funded. National Engineering & Contracting Co. is a local firm, who also reconstructed the Main Avenue Bridge last year.
