 ROY F. WESTON, INC. ANNOUNCES
 SECOND QUARTER 1992 RECORD EARNINGS
WEST CHESTER, Pa., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Roy F. Weston Inc. (NASDAQ: WSTNA) (WESTON)(R) today announced second quarter net income of $1.9 million or $.21 per share, an increase of 36 percent, compared with earnings of $1.4 million or $.16 per share for the second quarter of 1991.
Second quarter net revenues were $54.6 million, an increase of $1.8 million, or 3 percent from the level of a year earlier. Gross revenues rose 5 percent to $81.8 million, compared with $77.6 million in the second quarter of 1991.
For the six month period ended June 30, 1992, the company's net income was $3.3 million or $.36 per share, compared with $2.3 million or $.26 per share for the first half of 1991, an increase of 45 percent.
Net revenues for the first six months were $109.5 million, an increase of $7.8 million, or 8 percent from the first half of 1991. Gross revenues increased 8 percent to $163.6 million compared with $151.7 million for the first half of 1991.
"Second quarter earnings of $1.9 million are a record for WESTON, reflecting our continued emphasis on margin improvement through cost controls, and enhanced project management decision making, as well as new marketplace positions," said WESTON President and Chief Executive Officer William J. Marrazzo.
WESTON's thermal treatment and analytics businesses continue to reflect improved financial performance, offsetting some softness in other areas of our business due to the economy. The company's geographic, customer and service line diversity has enabled us to produce consistently improved results and we have focused on improving WESTON's bottom line by carefully selecting and negotiating our proposals and contracts. The combination of well negotiated contracts and the benefits of our new project control system should further expand our ability to manage projects more profitably," said Marrazzo.
Contract awards during the second quarter were strong in the federal sector. WESTON received several large Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Energy (DOE) contracts, including a major cleanup contract at the U.S. Army's Rocky Mountain Arsenal facility near Denver, Colo. This 54-month contract, valued at up to $100 million, is expected to generate at least $25 to $30 million in revenues to WESTON. Additionally, DOE's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) renewed a contract with the company to provide technical support for its program to accept, transport, store and permanently dispose of the nation's spent nuclear fuel. Estimated contract value is $34 million.
Also in the federal sector, WESTON continued as a leading environmental engineering firm in the cleanup of decommissioned Air Force bases. During the second quarter, the company received a $4 million add-on contract to provide environmental investigation at Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire.
"These three high profile projects reflect WESTON's strength as a major DOD and DOE contractor and will provide us with invaluable experience, positioning the company well to receive its fair share of this growing market sector," Marrazzo said.
During the second quarter, company sales continued to improve in the analytical laboratories and thermal treatment business. The company's smaller thermal incineration unit, the TIS5, is scheduled to be utilized on the recently announced $7 million incineration contract with the University of Minnesota later this year, after completing its operations at the Laskin-Poplar site in Ohio. The larger TIS20 unit is booked through the middle of 1993 to incinerate explosives-contaminated soils as part of a $16 million project at U.S. Army Depots in Illinois and Alabama. "We are optimistic that we will leverage the company's thermal treatment experience and utilization into improved future earnings," concluded Marrazzo.
In the first half of the year, federal government work accounted for 45 percent of contract bookings. Industrial contracts represented 40 percent of total bookings and the balance of activity was generated by state and local government agencies.
WESTON is a full-service environmental engineering, design and consulting firm providing nationwide analytical laboratory services, consulting and engineering, remediation, facility construction and operations, technical information management and major program management services. The company is headquartered in West Chester and operates a national network of 3,000 employees in 45 offices, including Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, New York and Washington, D.C.
