ROTARY POWER INTERNATIONAL ACQUIRES DEFENSE GROUP INDUSTRIES
WOOD-RIDGE, N.J., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Rotary Power International, Inc. (RPI) announced today the acquisition of all the assets and intellectual property of Defense Group Industries, Inc. (DGII) of Farmingdale, Long Island and the transfer to Wood-Ridge of the personnel of DGII. Simultaneously, RPI signed an exclusive license with Wankel GmbH of Lindau, Germany, for all their gasoline and heavy fuel rotary Wankel-type engines. Terms of these transactions were not disclosed.
DGII, a wholly owned subsidiary of Defense Group, Inc. of Falls Church, Va., formed in 1989 primarily for the development of small gasoline, gaseous fuel and heavy fuel rotary engines for both military and commercial applications under a license with Wankel GmbH. DGII was awarded various heavy fuel research and development contracts from the U.S. Military and defense industry for auxiliary power units, environmental control units and unmanned aerial vehicle powerplants. In addition, DGII provided prototype gasoline rotary engines for commercial automotive hybrid electric vehicle evaluations in the United States.
Richard M.H. Thompson, president of RPI, said that "We're extremely pleased with the acquisition of DGII and the Wankel license. This adds to our already extensive experience in rotary engine technology." RPI already owns the rotary engine technology developed by the Curtiss- Wright Corporation and Deere and Company. Mr. Thompson also said "With the addition of the DGII/Wankel 400cc engine, RPI now has four engine families which will span a range of 10 to 3000 BHP using rotors of 0.4, 0.7, 1.7, and 5.8 liters displacement. Increasing the number of power sections permits this wide power range with only four basic rotor sizes."
Rotary power is currently being developed to meet the military's requirement for light weight, small, multi-fuel powerplants used by highly mobile rapid deployment forces. RPI is also currently discussing joint venture development of the rotary engine for use in hybrid electric vehicles, high speed marine craft, electric power generation and general aviation. These negotiations are taking place with major industrial corporations in the U.S. and Europe.
