ROSS SYSTEMS INTRODUCES PROCESS MANUFACTURING SYSTEM,
LAUNCHES COMPLETE LINE OF MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS
Powerful Integrated 4GL-based Manufacturing, Distribution and
Financial Modules Available for Process and Discrete Applications
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Ross Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROSS) today announced the immediate availability of PROMIX, its flagship process manufacturing system that supports the Gartner Group's Enterprise Resource Planning model.
PROMIX is a complete integrated manufacturing, distribution and financial system aimed at companies with global operations. Ross Systems is a leading supplier of financial, human resources and distribution solutions devoted exclusively to the Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) systems.
PROMIX was developed using Ross' own fourth generation language environment (4GL), Gembase, and capitalizes on the advantages of relational database and graphical user interface technologies. It is easily integrated with other manufacturing hardware and software systems such as supervisory line control systems.
PROMIX is targeted at batch manufacturers in industries such as paint, food and beverages, chemicals, pulp and paper products, and pharmaceuticals. The system was jointly developed with a group of process manufacturers and with the assistance of a Digital Equipment Corporation subsidiary.
"The potential for the PROMIX product line is particularly strong since there are few products on the market today that adequately address the needs of process manufacturers. Most manufacturing systems that claim to be process-oriented are really discrete MRP II-type systems that have been modified to add a few process features. In reality, the two types of manufacturers have very different needs," said Dennis V. Vohs, Ross chairman and chief executive officer.
PROMIX benefits from a "from-the-ground-up" development approach that included inputs from active process manufacturers. PROMIX uniquely addresses specific process requirements such as finite scheduling, co-product and by-product processing, and process costing.
"PROMIX is proving to have a special appeal to manufacturers in the Consumer Packaged Goods Industry in many countries around the world. Of particular significance is its close fit to the way our customers run their businesses, and its ease-of-use," said David Gutman, Consumer Packaged Goods Industry Group Manager at Digital Equipment Corporation. "Also, the standard integration to process automation systems provided by PROMIX meets the need to tie real-time information to all levels of manufacturing management," he said.
PROMIX consists of 12 integrated modules that provide process-specific functionality as well as distribution and financial management. The 12 modules are: Process Planning, Process Manufacturing, Process Costing, Inventory Control, Warehouse Management, Purchase Order Processing, Sales Order Processing, Sales Analysis, General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Fixed Assets.
PROMIX licensing ranges from $100,000 to $750,000 per installation. Fees are based on a combination of CPU size and number of users.
PROMIX and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
The Gartner Group has described the manufacturing system requirements for the 1990s under the umbrella term of Enterprise Resource Planning, or ERP. In the '90s, manufacturing operations will look beyond the systems today to a more integrated open systems environment that takes advantage of modern technology such as relational database management systems, 4GL tools, and graphical user interfaces. PROMIX is designed with these considerations in mind.
Ross Systems is committed to Digital's technology program, including Digital's Network Application Support (NAS), a unified software environment that enables applications software to integrate across a distributed, multi-vendor environment. PROMIX is designed to run under Digital's VAX Rdb/VMS database and utilizes the DECwindows graphical interface.
Ross Systems' ongoing technology commitment is in step with the goals of ERP and ensures that PROMIX, along with the rest of the Ross product line, will continue to embrace emerging technologies to provide customers with the powerful, productive tools they need to compete in the coming decade while preserving their current computing investments.
 COMMAND for Discrete Manufacturing
Ross Systems is also introducing the COMMAND discrete manufacturing system. COMMAND is offered as 11 integrated modules that cover MRP, work order processing, master production scheduling and rough-cut capacity planning, distribution and financials. The product is developed entirely under Ross' 4GL for use in VAX/RMS installations. COMMAND licenses range from $50,000 to $450,000.
 Excellent Expansion Market for Ross
"Manufacturing systems are an obvious complement to our current business," said Vohs. "A significant number of customers for our other software products are manufacturers; introducing a manufacturing line will allow us to provide a broader base of solutions for their needs," he said. Vohs is not a newcomer to manufacturing concerns. Prior to leading a management buyout of Ross Systems in 1988, he was president of MSA Advanced Manufacturing Inc.
Ross acquired PROMIX and COMMAND when it purchased Pioneer Computer Group Ltd. earlier this year. Since the acquisition, Ross has augmented Pioneer's existing sales channels with a worldwide direct sales and support organization focused on the manufacturing market. COMMAND, which was introduced in 1982, has a worldwide installed base of more than 250 sites.
Ross Systems, Inc., was among the first companies to offer commercial accounting software for the Digital VAX computer, and has been a member of Digital's Cooperative Marketing Program (CMP) since 1984. Today, Ross Systems, Inc. develops and markets a broad range of business solutions in three strategic environments in the Digital marketplace: VMS, UNIX and client/server. Ross' products encompass financial, human resources, and distribution systems as well as manufacturing and public sector applications complemented by a fourth generation application development language. The company has been following a corporate development strategy of broadening the product line and expanding through both internal growth and acquisitions.
Ross Systems corporate headquarters are located at 555 Twin Dolphin Drive, Redwood City, CA 94065; telephone: 415-593-2500.
