ROSS SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES JOB COSTING SOFTWARE,
 SIMPLIFIES TRACKING OF PROJECT COSTS
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Ross Systems (NASDAQ: ROSS) today introduced Job Cost, the newest module in the company's Renaissance Series of integrated financial software for Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) computers.
The software, which works in conjunction with other Ross Systems financial software modules, tracks costs for multiple internal or customer projects. Using Job Cost, project managers can view timely information regarding the profitability, cost and revenue status of all ongoing projects.
Job Cost was designed to work integrally with other modules in Ross' Renaissance financial software series. In addition, it has a generalized interface that makes it easy for users to access and use information from other applications that provide important project information.
The software utilizes a job code structure which enables it to extract appropriate accounting data posted to Ross financial and human resources modules. Data entry is minimized because source systems such as Accounts Payable and General Ledger accept job numbers for transactions that support immediate validation against Job Cost codes and the subsequent direct transfer of information. Job Cost maintains its own database so that project-related information can be managed and analyzed separately from non-project accounting data.
"Project managers have specialized requirements such as contract tracking revenue recognition, subcontractor analysis and profitability tracking," said Dennis V. Vohs, chairman and CEO of Ross Systems. "Many vendors try to convince their customers that General Ledger can do job cost functions, however, we believe that the complexity of job costing is best served with a dedicated application. Ross provides a powerful package that is fully integrated with our sophisticated family of financial software for maximum benefit."
 Joint Venture Development
Job Cost was developed as a joint venture between Ross Systems and CBR Cement Corporation, San Mateo, Calif. CBR Cement provides cement and construction materials and services. According to Al Wemp, MIS manager of CBR Cement's Calgary offices, an extensive search for a full- functioned, yet easy-to-use VAX-based job costing software was disappointing. CBR Cement approached Ross to assist with the development because of Ross' leadership in the Digital financial software marketplace.
The development team included seven end users from various CBR Cement operations to ensure that the final product would have the functionality required for applications where financial success depended on the effectiveness of per-project accounting and controls. Operations where CBR Cement is implementing Job Cost include both construction services and product costing on some of their manufactured products.
"Working with Ross was a tremendous experience," said Ernie P. Bayrock, vice president, finance, for the Construction Services and Pipe Division of CBR Cement Canada, Ltd. "Their expertise and dedication resulted in a package that more than satisfies all our requirements, and is totally integrated with other Ross products."
 Produce Features
Job Cost generates standard reports such as Job Detail, which shows all transactions by cost type; Job Summary, which shows year-to-date and job-to-date revenue, costs, margins, and completion percentage; and Cost Control, which compares actual costs to budgeted costs and highlights cost overruns. Customized reports can also be created to summarize jobs, tasks and cost types using CrossView Plus, Ross' report writing tool.
Besides tracking accounting data, Job Cost can store project details about customers, locations, contracts, consultants, and subcontractors for easy reference. A history of bid modifications can be tracked if cost estimates change. Comment fields, which permit entry of up to 64K bytes of text, are provided for notations about specific project aspects.
A flexible job coding structure allows for up to 10 elements in each job number. Although the job number is independent of the GL account number, each element can be tied to one or more elements of the GL number, and GL numbers are automatically generated when the job number is entered to save data entry time.
Job Cost makes entry of new project information easy. For example, a copy function permits quick setup of similar jobs. User-defined job codes can be shared among jobs or created independently for a group of jobs. Data entry into user-defined job fields can be specified as optional or required.
An equipment tracking system that facilitates accounting for capital equipment used on jobs is available for use with Job Cost. When integrated with Ross Systems' Fixed Assets module, equipment can be tied to company asset records which include depreciation data.
Like other Ross Systems applications, Job Cost is menu driven and features online help which can be accessed any time for information about specific tasks.
 Developed Using Ross' GEMBASE 4GL
Job Cost was developed using Ross Systems' fourth generation language development tool GEMBASE. GEMBASE is a powerful prototyping, development, and maintenance tool that makes it possible for developers to delete, add, or move data fields or create new data relationships in a fraction of the time normally required by traditional development tools. The GEMBASE Data Management Language is so powerful that it eliminates the need for 3GL coding in development projects. GEMBASE was one of the first products Ross migrated to the Alpha AXP architecture.
 Pricing and Availability
Pricing for Job Cost starts at $14,000. It is available for shipment now on the OpenVMS platform, including a version for Digital Equipment Corporation's new Alpha AXP architecture.
