Newark, Calif., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Ross Stores Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: ROST) today reported sales of $98 million for the five-week period ended April 3, 1993, an 11-percent increase above the $88 million recorded for the five weeks ended April 4, 1992. Comparable store sales for the month increased 1 percent from the prior year.

In commenting on the company's performance, Norman A. Ferber, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, stated, "Even though business during March was negatively affected by severe winter weather in many of our markets, we are disappointed with the level of sales during the month. Nevertheless, we have been able to keep expenses well under control and, as a result, expect earnings per share for the first quarter of 1993 to be in the range of 15 cents to 17 cents, compared to 13 cents for the first quarter of 1992."
Ross Stores Inc. operates a national chain of off-price retail stores offering first quality, in-season, branded apparel and apparel- related merchandise for the entire family. The company had 230 stores in operation at April 3, 1993, compared to 210 stores at the end of the same period last year.
