ROSS STORES ANNOUNCES MAJOR OPENING BLITZ IN WASHINGTON
NEWARK, Calif., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Ross 'Dress For Less' (NASDAQ: ROST) is kicking off its 1992 expansion program with a major opening blitz in the Washington area. Four new Ross stores will open during the next month in Alexandria and Leesburg, Va., and Columbia and Silver Spring, Md. A total of eight new stores are opening throughout the country this spring, as Ross continues its nationwide expansion.
In commenting on these new locations, Norman A. Ferber, president and chief executive officer, stated, "Our strategy of offering competitive values on recognizable quality name brand merchandise worked well during 1991, in spite of the tough economic environment. These results give us the confidence to make a major, competitive thrust in the Washington area with these four new stores. Our goal is to become the dominant off-price retailer in this key market for Ross."
The Old Town Alexandria store will grand-open on Sunday, March 15. It occupies 28,500 square feet in the upper two levels of Old Town Center, located at the northwest corner of King and Washington streets, on the west bank of the Potomac River. The building, originally occupied by J.C. Penney, has been renovated to reflect the location's unique charm and history, and the area is a popular shopping destination. In the immediate vicinity are such nationally known retailers as The Gap, Banana Republic, Benetton, Laura Ashley, Pier 1 Imports, Talbots and Williams-Sonoma.
The fast-growing community of Leesburg, Va., is the site of the second Ross grand opening on March 15. A new 26,000 square foot Ross 'Dress For Less' is located in Battlefield Shopping Center, a new 360,000 square foot shopping center at the northwest corner of US 15 By-Pass and Edwards Ferry Rd. in Leesburg. Ross will co-anchor the center with Hechinger's, Shopper's Food Warehouse and Hub Furniture.
Another Ross 'Dress For Less' will also grand-open on Sunday, March 15, in Columbia, Md. The new 26,500 square foot store is located in the newly expanded Dobbin Center, at the corner of Route 175 and Dobbin Rd. The center provides one-stop shopping convenience for customers, with co-tenants that include K-Mart, Hechinger's and F&M Drug.
The fourth new Ross will grand-open on Thursday, April 2, in City Place, the revolutionary new retailing concept in downtown Silver Spring, Md. This unique, five-level enclosed mall is located at the northeast corner of Colesville Rd. and Georgia Ave. The new 28,000 square foot Ross 'Dress For Less' is on the ground floor of the expansive, 300,000 square foot center, joining more than 75 mall stores, each reinforcing a clear value theme. Other amenities include a 10-screen theater complex, along with a wide array of restaurants to meet any taste.
Ross is committed to building market share in existing markets, as demonstrated by this major expansion in the Washington area. There will now be a total of 17 Ross 'Dress For Less' stores in the Washington/Baltimore megalopolis.
Four other new Ross 'Dress For Less' stores are opening this spring in the Philadelphia, Tampa, El Paso and Los Angeles markets. With these new openings, Ross will operate 211 stores in 18 states coast-to-coast.
