ROSS 'DRESS FOR LESS' LAUNCHES 1993 EXPANSION PROGRAM

Newark, Calif., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- California-based Ross Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: ROST) announced today the launching of its expansion program for 1993. Eleven new Ross 'Dress For Less' stores will grand open throughout its existing markets during March and April. These openings include three stores that are being relocated to stronger retail locations within existing trade areas. With these new locations, Ross will operate a total of 231 stores in 18 states.
In commenting on his company's continued growth, Norman A. Ferber, president and chief executive officer, stated, "For the past two years, our merchandising thrust has been to increase the percentage of national brands at competitive everyday discounts within our merchandise assortments. This strategy has been well received by our customers, giving us the confidence to move forward with our 1993 expansion program. We believe our continued emphasis on value will be the key to sustaining our growth throughout the coming years."
Ross is committed to building market share in existing markets, as demonstrated by its major expansion thrust in California, where the three relocations and four new stores are opening. New stores are opening in San Pedro, Santee and San Diego in Southern California; and in Livermore in the San Francisco Bay Area. Existing stores in Glendora and Ontario are being replaced by the new Azusa and Montclair stores. The Vacaville store is moving to a superior location in the same city. There are now a total of 108 Ross 'Dress For Less' stores throughout the state, strengthening Ross' position as the dominant off-price retailer in California.
Ross is also fortifying its position in other key markets throughout the country. New stores will open this spring in Portland, Ore.; Peoria, Ariz.; McAllen, Texas; and Montgomeryville, Penn. These 11 new stores are the first of 26 new locations that Ross plans for 1993.
Ross Stores Inc. generated sales of $1.046 billion in its 1992 fiscal year. The off-price retailer offers first quality, in-season, branded apparel and footwear for the entire family at 20 to 60 percent less than department and specialty store prices, as well as complete departments for accessories and fragrances at similar savings.
