RON HARTWIG NAMED PRESIDENT OF HILL AND KNOWLTON USA
NEW YORK, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Ron Hartwig, head of Hill and

Knowlton's Los Angeles office and Western region, was named today as president and chief operating officer of Hill and Knowlton USA.
Hartwig, whose appointment was announced by Thomas E. Eidson, president and chief executive officer of Hill and Knowlton Inc., becomes a member of the company's board and its executive committee. The office of president of Hill and Knowlton USA previously was held by Craig L. Fuller, who resigned earlier this year.
Eidson said Hartwig will continue to be based in the Los Angeles office and to oversee the Western region as part of his U.S.-wide responsibilities.
A native of Cleveland, and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Hartwig had a 12-year career with General Motors, serving in a number of capacities in the United States and Europe.
During this period, he took a year's leave of absence to serve in the Carter Administration as director of the office of public affairs of the U.S. Department of Commerce and as counselor to the secretary of Commerce. He returned to General Motors and was manager of European Public Relations for that company before joining Hill and Knowlton in 1981.
Hartwig was named the first head of H&K's Japanese business division in 1982. He became a managing director in 1987 and general manager of the Western region and the Los Angeles office in 1988.
"We are delighted that Ron will be assuming his new role at a time when an exciting new future is taking shape for this firm," Eidson said. "Hill and Knowlton USA will greatly benefit from the wide range of his experience in the United States and overseas, in the government, the private sector, and the agency field."
Hartwig said, "The opportunity to play a larger role in Hill and Knowlton's future is a great responsibility. We will be building on the values that made this company great even as we gear up for the challenges of a rapidly changing world."
Hartwig is responsible for Hill and Knowlton's largest client, Mazda, for the development of the Japanese business division and its client list, and for the inception of one of the first state public affairs networks in the country, CAL-PIN.
As head of the USA operation, Hartwig will be responsible for 18 U.S. offices with a total of 680 employees.
Hill and Knowlton, Inc., based in New York, is the leading international public relations/public affairs firm with 66 offices in 25 countries. Its parent company, WPP Group, plc, is one of the leading advertising and marketing service groups in the world.
