ROMERO WILL HEAD BLOCKBUSTER/IBM DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY; WAS IBM SOUTH FLORIDA GENERAL MANAGER

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Antonio J. Romero, 43, former general manager of domestic and international markets for IBM's South Florida $400 million operations for the past 4 1/2 years, has been named a Blockbuster vice president and chief executive officer of NewLeaf Entertainment Corporation by H. Wayne Huizenga, chairman and chief executive officer of Blockbuster Entertainment Corporation (NYSE: BV).
Romero will assume his new duties on Monday, Aug. 2 and will report to Steven R. Berrard, Blockbuster president and chief operating officer.
NewLeaf is one of two joint venture companies formed by Blockbuster and IBM to market, develop and produce a system to transmit digital entertainment products and services. NewLeaf and its sister company, Fairway Technology Associates, are located in Deerfield Beach, Fla.
Romero's 16-year career with IBM has centered around digital technology development, services and marketing. He undertook numerous international and corporate assignments for IBM.
David S. Lundeen, who was instrumental in bringing Blockbuster's digital server technology to its current stage of development for the joint venture, remains as president of NewLeaf Entertainment Corporation and president of Blockbuster's Technology Division.
Huizenga characterized the selection of Romero as one that fills a vital role in Blockbuster's technological future. He said, "Tony's distinguished career in highly demanding assignments with IBM will give the joint venture the credibility and leadership that enable us to establish a significant role in the digital transmission of entertainment product and services. His operation in South Florida has worked with Blockbuster for nearly three years and we have come to value his expertise to the point where we wanted his contributions at our disposal full-time."
Robert J. Carberry, president of IBM's Fireworks Partners, parent company of Fairview Technology Associates, said: "During his years at IBM, Tony has demonstrated his superior grasp of digital development and services as well as marketing expertise. Our reluctance to see him leave IBM is offset by our confidence that the strategic opportunity offered by this joint venture between IBM and Blockbuster will benefit from his outstanding leadership."
Romero is a graduate of the University of Maryland.
Mr. and Mrs. Romero are the parents of a son and a daughter: A.J. Jr., 2 1/2, and Christina, 5. The Romero family resides in Miami and will relocate to Broward County.
