-- CBS is First Broadcaster Linked to Project --
TORONTO, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- An exclusive collaboration was

announced today, between two of Canada's leading media companies. A top producer-distributor of international film and television programming, Alliance Communications Corporation, and the world's largest publisher of series romance-fiction, Harlequin Enterprises, will produce and globally market successive editions of television and home video romance movies. The announcement was made jointly by Chairman and CEO of Alliance Communications, Robert Lantos, and President and CEO of Harlequin Enterprises, Brian E. Hickey.
The Harlequin Alliance will capitalize on the immense popularity of the romance-fiction genre. With more than 200 million books sold annually, over 60 new Harlequin titles hit the stands every month. Alliance has international television rights to all titles in Harlequin's extraordinary library, currently comprised of more than 16,000 titles.
The world's leading broadcasters will be linked with the venture to form a romance television syndicate. CBS is the first network to join the project.
"The Harlequin Alliance movies target a huge untapped audience with an unbeatable brand name product," says Alliance Communications' Lantos.
Worldwide distribution in all media will be handled by Alliance. Harlequin will be responsible for direct mail home video marketing.
"We're delighted to have established a relationship with Alliance," says Harlequin Enterprises' Hickey. "They are, after all, Canada's leading producer and distributor of filmed entertainment with an international reputation for highly acclaimed productions. We look forward to a long and rewarding love affair!"
Alliance will translate to screen some of the world's most popular romance-fiction novels. "We will bring to life the written word of Harlequin novels in a visual odyssey of intriguing, contemporary adventures, emanating from strong and passionate plots, with guaranteed happy endings," says Susan Minas, Alliance's director of development for Europe in the Paris office. Minas' efforts have been instrumental in seeing the new venture come to fruition.
The first edition of six movies will be available by the summer of 1994 to be followed by subsequent collections of thirteen. The movies, budgeted at $3 million each, will be filmed in a variety of international locations.
Harlequin brings proven marketing skills to the project. Its techniques, which have transcended conventional marketing approaches, have resulted in a cumulative 3.4 billion novels sold by 1992.
