ROHR TO CLOSE HAGERSTOWN, MD., FACILITY

CHULA VISTA, Calif., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Rohr (NYSE: RHR) will phase out its Hagerstown, Md., composite bonding and final assembly facility, the company told employees today. The company expects to complete the phaseout over the next 12 months.
Robert Daly, senior vice president and chief operating officer, said, "Regretfully, this action was made necessary by our excess manufacturing capacity resulting from the downturn in the industries we serve. The decision was made even more difficult by the record of outstanding achievement by the Hagerstown employees."
The company is developing a plan to consolidate work now being performed at Hagerstown at other Rohr facilities in the United States.
Rohr purchased the plant from Fairchild Industries in 1987. It occupies 57 acres of land with 430,000-square-feet of building space and 380 full-time employees.
Rohr closed a plant in Auburn, Wash., last year and has deferred completion of a manufacturing facility in Arkadelphia, Ark., because of the need to reduce manufacturing capacity in the current commercial aerospace environment.
Rohr will set up a transition center at Hagerstown to provide counseling and job placement assistance for laid-off employees.
Rohr designs, manufactures, integrates and supports engine nacelle systems and components for commercial, military and business aircraft. The company also manufactures solid rocket motor casings and nozzles for the Titan IV launch vehicle. Rohr, headquartered in Chula Vista, has facilities in the United States and Europe.
