ROHR INC. SEEKS TECHNOLOGY TO REDUCE FUEL COSTS
CHULA VISTA, Calif., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Rohr Inc.

(NYSE: RHR) recently participated in an industry-government team led by GE Aircraft Engines in a successful series of test flights to evaluate a concept to obtain laminar flow on a nacelle. Nacelles are the complex aerodynamic structures surrounding an aircraft engine.
The team's hybrid laminar flow nacelle (HLFN) configuration incorporates improved aerodynamic lines and a suction system designed to reduce drag. Reduced drag means reduced fuel consumption and lower operational costs for tomorrow's commercial transports. Reduced fuel consumption also reduces nitrogen oxides and other harmful by-products of combustion.
Laminar flow may be compared to water flowing over a waterfall where it flows smoothly at the top but breaks up into turbulent flow toward the bottom. When air flows over an airfoil it breaks up into many swirling eddies, and this turbulence creates drag that slows the aircraft. Scientists have long sought ways to suppress eddies and create laminar flow in which the air slides over the airfoil's surface in smooth layers.
"Laminar flow technology can save the airline industry $100 million a year in reduced fuel bills and will be a key initiative at Rohr for future nacelles," said Dr. Alek Mikolajczak, Rohr's vice president of technology and new business.
The flight tests were conducted at Mojave Airport, north of Los Angeles, on an Airbus A300, using a GE engine, during July and August.
Rohr designs, integrates, manufactures and supports engine nacelle systems and components for commercial, military and business aircraft. The company also manufactures solid rocket motor casings and nozzles for the Titan IV launch vehicle. Rohr, headquartered in Chula Vista, has facilities in the United States and Europe.
