PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. F. Otto Haas, retired president and chief executive officer of Rohm and Haas Company (NYSE: ROH), died Sunday, Jan. 2, at his home in Ambler, Pa., after a period of illness.
Dr. Haas joined the company in 1940 after earning his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He saw military service with the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1946; he then returned to the company and remained active until he retired from the board of directors in 1984.
Rohm and Haas Chairman J. Lawrence Wilson said the company has lost a friend and a man of strong principle who was the architect of the modern company. "Fate put the future of the company in Dr. Haas's hands in 1960 upon the death of his father and Rohm and Haas founder," Wilson said. "Although schooled as a scientist, Dr. Haas recognized his more compelling challenge was to devise a new management structure for the company. He knew intuitively that the entrepreneurial style of his father would need to change to a more decentralized and modern management approach.
"During his tenure as chief executive officer (1960-1970), Dr. Haas skillfully led Rohm and Haas through the transition to a contemporary organization with a professional management team. The successful global enterprise of today is a tribute to the leadership he provided during his long career," Wilson added.
