ROHM AND HAAS COMPANY RECEIVES NATIONAL BLACK MBA ASSOCIATION 'SILVER TORCH AWARD' PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Rohm and Haas Company (NYSE: ROH), the Philadelphia-based specialty chemicals company, received the National Black MBA Association's top recognition for promoting diversity, called the Silver Torch Award. The award highlights organizations that have continually promoted equal opportunities for minority professionals, helping them to advance to strategic positions through top management commitment and innovative internal and external programs. According to Angela Dowd-Burton, a corporate credit manager for Rohm and Haas and a member of the Black MBA Association, the nomination of Rohm and Haas was a natural. "I nominated our company because management's commitment to diversity is a very integral part of our corporate culture," she said. "Not only does Rohm and Haas have a policy that incorporates the management of diversity as a major component of its overall mission, but the top executives from the chairman on down make it a special priority to meet with black managers to address their concerns." Delbert S. Payne, manager of Corporate Social Investment for Rohm and Haas, said the award solidifies the company's strong commitment to helping minorities, not only within the organization, but throughout their high school and college experiences. "We realize the difficult challenges that face minorities at all levels, and that's why we are so involved in our corporate diversity programs, as well as through educational efforts that recruit and train qualified minority students," Payne said. "In fact, the current diversity training program we now have in place is a prerequisite course required for all first line, middle and executive management." Among the programs Rohm and Haas has in place to help minorities are: -- Mentoring programs for black students at Benjamin Franklin High School and other schools across the United State; -- Support of Drexel University's Minorities Chemical Engineering Program (MCEP); -- Summer internship programs for minorities and women (graduate and undergraduate); and -- Numerous company-wide diversity education programs, equal opportunity advisory committees, and employee surveys designed to monitor minority employee attitudes. Rohm and Haas Company is a manufacturer of specialty chemicals used around the world to make everyday products such as house paints, food packaging, automobile taillights, window frames, diapers, motor oils, refined sugar, construction materials, magazines, leather shoes and garments, agricultural products and laboratory testing equipment.
