ROHM AND HAAS: MANUFACTURING EXPANSION IN CHAUNY IS PART OF OVERALL STRATEGY FOR ION EXCHANGE BUSINESS WORLDWIDE

PHILADELPHIA, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Rohm and Haas Company (NYSE: ROH) announced today the completion of a $20 million expansion of its ion exchange manufacturing facility in Chauny, France.
"We have passed an important milepost in our effort to increase manufacturing efficiencies and improve product availability," said Paul Baduini, worldwide business unit director for Ion Exchange. "The closure of our anion manufacturing plants in Philadelphia, USA, and in Mozzanica, Italy -- combined with the improvements at the state-of-the- art facility in Chauny -- have put us well on our way to becoming the most cost-effective producer of ion exchange resins in the world."
"The Chauny plant is dedicated solely to the production of ion exchange resins," explained Pierre Vulliez-Sermet, European business manager for Ion Exchange. "Rohm and Haas spent more than $20 million to increase capacity, further modernize the plant and to expand wastewater treatment facilities."
Baduini said the manufacturing realignment represents just one aspect of Ion Exchange's efforts to assure that it can bring the products and services customers want -- from the simple to the sophisticated -- with a cost structure that is appropriate to the need. During the past six months, the business has introduced new product technology and realigned its marketing focus.
The most dramatic product innovation has been the introduction of Amberjet ion exchange resins. This new technology produces uniform, particle-sized resins which enable customers to run facilities at more efficient rates. The jetting process also is leading the business into new applications, such as chromatography, where high-performance resins are critical. Other technology is being introduced which will allow the Ion Exchange business to make fewer products that meet a broader range of customer needs.
The business also has refocused its marketing organization in order to better serve global customers. Four key markets have been identified -- power, catalysis, pharmaceutical and ultrapure water. "With this new organization, we can keep a broader view of the world, yet quickly energize and focus research, technology and production resources to serve customers as needed," said Baduini.
