ROHM & HAAS AGREES TO PERFORM OFF-SITE CLEANUP AT LIPARI LANDFILL SUPERFUND SITE IN MANTUA TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY

NEW YORK, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that the Rohm & Haas Company has agreed to clean up contamination at Chestnut Marsh and Alcyon Lake, and other off-site areas that make up the Lipari Landfill Superfund site in Mantua Township, N.J. The other off-site areas include two streams and an aquifer near the site. On Sept. 27, after several months of negotiations aimed at having the company undertake the multi-million dollar cleanup project proved unsuccessful, EPA issued the company a Superfund Unilateral Order.
Even though EPA issued the order, the company continued intensive discussions with the agency which led to this agreement. EPA and the company are in the final stages of drafting a consent decree to cover the implementation of the off-site remedy and other related issues such as recovery of past and future costs.
