ROCKWELL WABCO ABS COMBINES PRODUCT RELIABILITY WITH LEADING DIAGNOSTIC CAPABILITIES

ROCKWELL WABCO ABS COMBINES PRODUCT RELIABILITY
 WITH LEADING DIAGNOSTIC CAPABILITIES
LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockwell WABCO Vehicle Control Systems announced that its evolving lineup of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) is now compatible with Microprocessor Systems Inc.'s (MPSI) newly released Pro-Link 9000 diagnostic reader.
The announcement was made here today at the Mid-America Trucking Show.
Rockwell's commitment to superior on- and off-board diagnostic equipment provides original equipment manufacturer (OEM), as well as fleet and dealer service personnel with the ability to easily evaluate system performance, and when necessary, complete a quick repair to minimize downtime.
"While our primary goal is to provide ABS systems with the highest levels of performance and reliability, we're also listening to and meeting the needs of our OEM, fleet and dealer customers by leading the industry in ABS diagnostic capabilities," said Dennis L. Sandberg, sales and marketing manager for Rockwell WABCO Vehicle Control Systems.
According to project engineer Richard A. Romer, Rockwell WABCO's ABS can communicate with off-board diagnostic tools, such as MPSI's Pro-Link 9000, using the SAE J-1587 standardized communications link.
Available through Kent-Moore Tool Co., the MPSI Pro-Link 9000 -- when used with the Rockwell WABCO Cartridge -- allows technicians to quickly and easily read fault codes and troubleshoot Rockwell WABCO C-2 version ABS brake systems. "The Pro-Link simplifies pulling existing and stored failures out of memory and displays the information in easy- to-read terms," Romer said.
Romer noted the Pro-Link has diagnostic cartridges available for Allison, Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Ford, General Motors, and Mack Trucks electronic system products. The cartridge allows fleets and dealers the opportunity to minimize shop complexity and reduce cost by using one common tool for several different electronically controlled vehicle systems.
The Pro-Link diagnostic tool is compatible with either a 6-PIN Deutsch or 8-PIN AMP vehicle diagnostic connector, depending on vehicle specifications.
 On-Board Blink Code Diagnostics
In addition to compatibility with industry-leading, off-board diagnostics, Sandberg said Rockwell WABCO also offers state-of-the-art, on-board blink code diagnostic equipment. "Our complete diagnostic capabilities are designed to help technicians quickly pinpoint a system problem, which translates into reduced vehicle downtime," he said.
Rockwell WABCO's blink code diagnostics are now standard on virtually every truck, tractor, trailer or bus equipped with its anti-lock braking systems.
According to Romer, the electronic control unit (ECU) constantly scans the entire system immediately after the vehicle is started. If a problem exists, the technician can access a flashing sequence of error codes through a cab-mounted lamp. The system's ECU also features a non-volatile memory which "remembers" intermittent problems for later retrieval by fleet or dealer service technicians.
Available Test Adaptor Further Enhances Blink Code Capability
Romer said Rockwell WABCO's test adaptor unit, which is sold separately, can further simplify the technician's diagnostic procedure. Used in conjunction with the Rockwell WABCO blink code, the test adaptor lets technicians measure voltages and resistance of components in the system. When used with a standard Volt-Ohm Meter (VOM), the Test Adaptor lets the technician determine the condition of ABS valves, wheel speed sensors and associated wiring.
"The Test Adaptor is an inexpensive and compact tool that gives technicians the ability to immediately know the status of a problem identified by the blink code," Romer said.
Advanced Diagnostic Controller for OEM Use
Besides offering the latest in diagnostics designed for fleet and dealer technicians, Rockwell WABCO also features advanced diagnostic capabilities for original equipment manufacturers.
Rockwell WABCO's new off-board Diagnostic Controller attaches directly to the vehicle diagnostic connector and provides step-by-step diagnostic instructions. The Diagnostic Controller is guided by a "smart card" that prompts the technician through an entire check of the ABS system. Romer noted this tool is provided especially for OEM technicians who are making continuous end-of-the-line assembly checks, and it assures that each ABS system leaves the OEM's assembly plant ready to function reliably.
Rockwell WABCO Vehicle Control Systems is a joint venture of Rockwell International Corporation's (NYSE: ROK) Automotive business and American Standard Inc.'s WABCO Automotive Products Group. The venture was formed in early 1990 to supply vehicle control systems -- including truck, tractor, trailer and bus ABS and other air brake control systems components -- to North American truck operators.
