ROCKWELL OPENS TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNICAL DESIGN CENTER IN MOSCOW

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to globalize its telecommunications business, Rockwell International Corp. (NYSE: ROK) has opened the Russian Telecommunications Technical Design Center in Moscow. The center is one of several Rockwell facilities, including other technical centers, established to enhance the company's competitive position in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and create additional jobs in the United States.
Rockwell will establish and maintain the center in conjunction with Gambit Automated Design, a Santa Clara, Calif.-based company with a Russian subsidiary. The center is expected to be fully operational by the summer, employing 12 Russian engineers involved in algorithm and signal processing design and related software development.
"With the opening of this new technical center, Rockwell is expanding global alliances and augmenting its network of core competencies," said Lanny Ross, president of Rockwell's Telecommunications Business Segment, "as well as positioning the company for future telecommunications market opportunities in Russia."
The first group of engineers will initially focus on software development for Rockwell's advanced communications engines. According to Ross, future plans are established to add additional engineers to develop digital/analog device designs and automatic call director software. "To support Rockwell's world-class product development efforts in wireless communications and telephonic switching systems, we may expand the center to more than 50 engineers within the year," Ross said.
Housed in a 10,000-square-foot facility in Moscow, the Russian Technical Design Center is under the direction of Professor Vyacheslav Loshakov, who holds a doctorate in mathematics and computer science from the Moscow Insitute of Energy.
The center represents the latest in a number of ventures in Russia. Several Rockwell divisions have signed joint research and technology agreements with various Russian scientific institutes. Collins Commercial Avionics, Automotive, Allen-Bradley (industrial automation) and Graphics Systems (printing presses) are actively involved in pursuing markets in the CIS and regions of Eastern Europe.
Rockwell's Space Systems Division has agreements with NPO Energia, the Russian space firm, to pursue several space initiatives, and the Rocketdyne Division has been working on various projects with several Russian firms. Last year, Rockwell opened a corporate office in Moscow.
Rockwell's Telecommunications Business Segment includes three principal businesses: the Digital Communications Division (DCD), the Switching Systems Division (SSD) and the Microelectronics Technology Center (MTC). DCD, headquartered in Newport Beach, has been a pioneer in modem technology for more than 30 years. Today it is a world leader in fax and data modem components. SSD, based in Downers Grove, Ill., is a leader in the design and manufacture of telephone transaction call processing systems. MTC, headquartered in Newbury Park, Calif., is a leader in the development of gallium arsenide technology for a variety of commercial product applications.
Rockwell International Corp. is a multi-industry company applying advanced technology to a wide range of products in its electronics, aerospace, automotive and graphics businesses.
