ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL SPACE SYSTEMS DIVISION ANNOUNCES WORK FORCE REDUCTIONS

 ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL SPACE SYSTEMS DIVISION
 ANNOUNCES WORK FORCE REDUCTIONS
DOWNEY, Calif., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockwell International Corp.'s (NYSE: ROK) Space Systems Division (SSD) has informed its employees that significant layoffs are likely at its facilities in Downey and nearby Seal Beach, Calif.
In a letter to the division's local employees, SSD President Robert G. Minor explained that, "We have encountered unexpected reductions in our NASA business. In addition, many of our new business opportunities have been delayed due to government funding constraints."
Minor said the layoffs are necessary "because of reduced business levels and to allow SSD to remain a viable competitor." He said that he is "deeply disturbed that dedicated SSD employees will be adversely impacted."
Reductions will be made at all levels and will involve salaried as well as bargaining unit employees. While the exact impact is still being assessed, the layoff will result in a reduction of approximately 1,000 employees by this spring.
This work force reduction is in addition to an earlier announced 500-person layoff at SSD's Palmdale, Calif. facility. The Palmdale reduction is expected to be completed next month after the Space Shuttle Columbia modification ends.
Rockwell's SSD currently employs a total of 7,000 of the corporation's 27,000 employees working in Southern California.
