ROCKWELL CLUTCH MADE STANDARD ON FREIGHTLINER TRUCKS

TROY, Mich., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rockwell diaphragm-spring clutch has been selected as standard equipment for all Freightliner Class 8 tractors in a new long-term supply agreement effective with the truck manufacturer's January 1993 databook. Freightliner is the first truck manufacturer to make the Rockwell clutch standard.
Harry Backeberg, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Freightliner Corp., said, "Freightliner considered a number of clutch suppliers before selecting the Rockwell clutch, which received a high grade in areas like engineering, manufacturing and quality control."
Since July 1990, the Rockwell clutch has been standard equipment on Freightliners built by Freightliner of Canada, and the clutch exhibited its reliability in a very demanding market environment.
Featuring ceramic or organic friction material facings, the advanced dampened disc design absorbs the torsional vibration of today's high torque, low RPM engines -- thereby extending clutch life and protecting other drivetrain components like the transmission, driveshaft and drive axles.
James Painter, president of the Rockwell Clutch Co., said this standard position at Freightliner is a strong endorsement of the company's four-year-old clutch program. The clutches are manufactured under exacting quality standards at the company's Florence, Ky., facility.
"The technological advancements in Rockwell clutches demonstrate our commitment to providing North American truck manufacturers and truck operators with products that help decrease maintenance costs, promote driver comfort, as well as increase product reliability," Painter added.
Prior to being named standard equipment, the Rockwell clutch had become the major clutch supplier to Freightliner through customer specifications, driven by Rockwell marketing efforts. In early November, Freightliner selected Rockwell's Q Plus brakes as standard equipment for its Class 8 tractors.
Rockwell clutches are a key member of the most complete drivetrain in the industry, Drivetrain Plus(TM).
Rockwell Clutch Co. is a joint venture of Rockwell International Corporation and Daikin Manufacturing Co. Ltd., created in 1988 to supply heavy-duty truck clutches to the North American truck market.
Rockwell's On-Highway Products supplies vehicle manufacturers around the world with the industry's most complete drivetrain -- Drivetrain Plus. Rockwell components include axles -- steer, drive and trailer; brakes -- cam, wedge, air disc and automatic slack adjusters; clutches; transmissions; driveshafts and universal joints; transfer cases; on-board, electronic management systems; vehicle control systems; and aftermarket parts.
The company also supplies heavy-duty truck plastic hood assemblies.
Rockwell International (NYSE: ROK) is a multi-industry company applying advanced technology to a wide range of products in its electronics, aerospace, automotive and graphics businesses.
