 ROCKWELL AUTOMOTIVE COMPLETES DOUBLE PLAY
 IN ITS PLASTIC PRODUCTS BUSINESS
TROY, Mich., Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Befitting summer in North America, Rockwell International Corporation (NYSE: ROK) completed an important double play in its Plastic Products business when it shipped its 2-millionth units of two different components built in two different plants for two different customers.
From its Newton, N.C., plant in late July, Rockwell shipped its 2-millionth composite rocker arm cover to Ford Motor Company for its 3.0-liter V-6 engine.
In early August, Honda of America received from Rockwell's Lenoir, N.C., plant the 1-millionth composite bumper beam pair for the Accord.
"Passing these two milestones is the fruit of continuing our firm commitment to two valuable customers," William J. Laule, vice president and general manager, Plastic Products, said.
"With both Ford and Honda, each in its own way, our relationships comprise efforts to continuously improve the product and the process, and to find ways to lower overall costs, all to our respective mutual benefits."
Made of vinylester bulk molding composite (VEBMC), the rocker arm cover provides weight advantages, looks better, and lowers engine noise better than the metal component it replaced. Other advantages include lower tooling costs, reduced processing complexity, and a better seal. Rockwell delivers the covers as complete, ready-to-install units, including sealing gasket, oil filler neck and cap, PCV valve grommet, and fasteners.
The front-and-rear bumper beam sets for the Honda Accord recently helped the car achieve the highest ratings in four-way collision impact tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The glass mat thermoplastic (GMT) beams incorporate the industry's first use of unidirectional fiberglass reinforcements for bumper beams. Although no longer unique to this application, the use of unidirectional reinforcement provides strength along the beams' longitudinal planes, giving them substantial ability to absorb direct and angular impacts.
"We're proud of these accomplishments and could not have achieved them without the creativity, innovation and initiative of the employees at Newton and Lenoir," Laule noted. "Furthermore, the teamwork between our employees and those of Honda and Ford has been crucial.
"In a larger sense, our involvement in these two programs reflects our intense dedication to meeting our customers' needs and underscores our continuing commitment to our automotive customers."
