ROCHESTER TEL AND USA VIDEO EXPAND SCOPE OF TRIAL

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Rochester Telephone Corporation (NYSE: RTC) and USA Video Corp. will expand the scope and quality of their Video-on-Demand(TM) trial to include high density residential areas, such as apartment buildings and hotels, in addition to single-family dwellings in residential neighborhoods. They also will use an alternative transport technology that uses Rochester's current plant facilities. The trial, in which customers will pay for the service, is designed to test consumers' preferences for Video-on-Demand services and their usage patterns.
These services include hit movies, classic movies, music videos, sports and news programming, educational and "how to" videos, home shopping and interactive video games.
The field trial in Rochester, now scheduled to begin in March 1994, is expected to last six months. An end-to-end laboratory trial will occur in USA Video's Las Colinas, Texas development facility beginning Nov. 1, 1993.
The companies originally planned to use a fiber optic/coaxial transport system, but will expand it to include the use of three megabits per second Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology. ADSL technology enables the existing copper wire transport facilities to carry video signals, and will allow faster deployment of video services after the trial period.
"We are focused on providing our customers access to enhanced services such as Video-on Demand(TM) as quickly as possible," stated Jerry Carr, president of Rochester Telephone Operations. "The use of ADSL technology in our network will permit that."
"We are very pleased and excited about this expansion of the trial," said Gordon Lee, chairman and CEO of USA Video Corp. "We will now be able to supply compressed video at three megabits per second, which will provide an even higher quality video product to our customers in Rochester."
Rochester Tel serves more than one million customers through 49 telecommunications companies in 22 states. The company's principal lines of business include telephone operations, long distance, business systems and wireless operations.
USA Video is a turnkey Video-on-Demand(TM) service provider that has developed and is testing video storage, compression and transmission technology. Its headquarters are in Century City, Calif.
