ROCHESTER GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPLETES HIGH SCHOOL
 ENVIRONMENTAL PILOT PROGRAM
ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 10 /PRNewswire/ - - Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E) announced today in a news conference at Bishop Kearney High School that it has completed its environmental pilot program that brings important energy and environmental information to high school students.
The program is called "In Concert With The Environment." It was developed by EcoGroup, Inc., of Arizona, to bring to the classroom a flexible program that can educate students and parents about energy efficiency in the home, the advantages of recycling and the fuel and environmental weight placed on the household by transportation.
The school program can occupy up to two weeks of classroom work. Workbooks set forth lesson plans where students learn about environmental and energy-saving measures that can make a difference. The highlight of the energy portion of the program is the on-hands computer work that produces a detailed energy audit of the student's residence.
A customized survey book is given to each student. The student takes the book home and works with parents to fill in the information required, such as types of windows and insulation and appliances. The student then takes the completed survey and keyboards the information into the computer program.
The result is a customized printout that tells how the student's residence rates on an energy efficiency level. The report shows how much energy is being used and how much can be saved by taking advantage of certain measures that are described in the report. The report also scores the student's residence in terms of the positive environmental impact of the energy, transportation and recycling efforts.
The pilot program ends on June 12 at Bishop Kearney High School. This will have been the last of the schools involved in the pilot program that began in February. In all, 2,003 students have been part the pilot program that involved 19 schools, equally divided between city schools and parochial/suburban schools.
RG&E is the first company east of the Mississippi to sponsor "In Concert With The Environment." Power companies west and in Hawaii have met success with the program. RG&E is the first, however, to focus a pilot program largely in the urban schools.
Implementing "In Concert With The Environment" costs nothing to educators. Rochester Gas and Electric has made a commitment to serve education by providing the funding and support so nearly 25,000 students in the RG&E service territory will have the opportunity to experience the program.
RG&E's chairman, president and CEO Roger W. Kober presided today at the news conference conducted in classrooms at Bishop Kearney High School. In his remarks Kober said that the program is designed to show people that it is possible to make a difference in energy efficiency that results in gas and electric cost savings through individual actions in the home, and that can further benefit the environment now and in years ahead.
