ROBIN WILLIAMS TO STAR, CHRIS COLUMBUS TO DIRECT
BLUE WOLF PRODS.' 'MRS. DOUBTFIRE' FOR FOX
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The debut film for Robin and Marsha Williams' Blue Wolf Prods. will be the Twentieth Century Fox comedy "Mrs. Doubtfire," it was announced today by Roger Birnbaum, president, World-wide Production and executive vice president, Twentieth Century Fox. The film, to be directed by Chris Columbus, is written by Randi Mayem Singer, based on the British children's novel "Madame Doubtfire" by Anne Fine.
"Mrs. Doubtfire" will be produced by Robin and Marsha Williams, with Matthew Rushton and Mark Radcliffe serving as executive producers. Production, which begins March 30, 1993, will take place entirely in San Francisco. The film will be released for Christmas 1993.
"Mrs. Doubtfire" is a classic comedy in which Daniel and Miranda Hillard, a couple with three children, begin to go through a divorce -- at her instigation. Because Daniel is an out-of-work voice-over artist, Miranda gets temporary custody of the kids, leaving Daniel distraught over the minuscule amount of time he gets to spend with his family. Needing childcare, Miranda advertises for a nanny, which prompts the clever but desperate Daniel to disguise himself as an elderly British woman -- and he gets the job.
The film represents a continuing relationship between both Robin Williams and Columbus with Twentieth Century Fox. Williams stars this Christmas in Barry Levinson's "Toys," and Columbus directed "Home Alone," the third highest-grossing film of all time. He most recently directed "Home Alone 2: Lost In New York," which will open Nov. 20.
Williams is a three-time Oscar nominee for "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Dead Poets Society" and "The Fisher King." His other screen roles include "Hook," "Awakenings," "Moscow on the Hudson" and "The World According to Garp."
Williams, who began his career as a stand-up comedian, has won two Grammies for his comedy records "Reality, What a Concept" and "An Evening at the Met." The star of television's phenomenally successful "Mork & Mindy," Williams won Emmies for his performances in the television specials "Carol, Carl, Whoopi and Robin" and "ABC Presents a Royal Gala."
Director Columbus gained prominence in Hollywood for his trio of original scripts for producer Steven Spielberg, "Gremlins," "The Goonies" and "Young Sherlock Holmes," and followed these successes with his first directorial effort, "Adventures in Babysitting," directing another writer's script. He then guided his own screenplay for "Heartbreak Hotel" to the screen, before collaborating with John Hughes on "Home Alone." Following "Home Alone," he directed Fox's poignant romantic comedy "Only the Lonely" from his own screenplay.
Twentieth Century Fox is primarily engaged in the financing, development, production, distribution and marketing of motion pictures throughout the world and is a unit of Fox Inc.
