ROBERTO GUERRERO, QUAKER STATE BUICK GRAB RECORD INDY 500 POLE
SPEEDWAY, Ind., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Roberto Guerrero, driving a Quaker State Buick/Lola, captured the coveted pole position for the 76th Annual Indianapolis 500 by smashing speed records at the fabled 2.5-mile oval.
Guerrero averaged 232.482 miles per hour on his four-lap qualifying run, eclipsing by more than 7 mph the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's qualifying record of 225.301 set by Emerson Fittipaldi in 1990.
The Buick Indy V-6 engine used to power Guerrero's Lola chassis is a "stock block" type, so-called because it is derived from an actual American-made passenger car engine. Based on the 3300 V-6 motor available in many 1992 Buick Motor Division passenger cars, the Buick Indy V-6 is currently the only engine in Indy car racing based on an engine built for consumer use.
For Guerrero, 33, of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., it is his first Indy 500 pole position start. It is also the first pole win for the Indianapolis-based King Motorsports team owned by four-time NHRA drag racing world champion Kenny Bernstein of Dallas.
The Indianapolis 500 is slated for May 24.
