ROBERT TOWNSEND JOINS ATTORNEY GENERAL JANET RENO TO KICK OFF 10TH ANNUAL NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

Nationwide Crime/Drug Prevention Program in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 3
SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert Townsend, the writer, director and star of MGM's adventure-comedy "The Meteor Man," will join Attorney General Janet Reno for the official kick-off of the 10th Annual National Night Out on Aug. 3. Reno and Townsend will turn on a symbolic porch light, signifying the start of the event at a ceremony in the Great Hall of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington D.C. at 11 a.m.
National Night Out (NNO) is a nationwide crime and drug prevention program, which brings communities together in partnership with law enforcement and city officials to help fight crime. On Aug. 3, more than 26 million Americans in more than 8,600 communities will participate in simultaneous activities, such as rallies and block parties, to give criminals a "Going Away Party."
The same message is seen in MGM's upcoming film, "The Meteor Man." Opening nationwide on Aug. 6, "The Meteor Man" stars Townsend as a superhero for the '90s and sends a positive message about communities coming together to fight crime.
Also participating in the Washington kick-off ceremony will be Jack A. Nadol, acting director of the Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Assistance; Matt Peskin, creator of the NNO program and director of the National Association of Town Watch; and Keith Moultrie, who will perform a new song celebrating the 10th anniversary of NNO. Attending will be law enforcement officers, government officials, invited dignitaries, Justice Department employees and children from local youth organizations.
In addition to Townsend, "The Meteor Man" features an all-star cast, including Bill Cosby, James Earl Jones, Robert Guillaume, Marla Gibbs and Sinbad, with appearances by Luther Vandross and rap stars Another Bad Creation, Naughty By Nature, Cypress Hill, Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane. Townsend directed the film from his own screenplay, with Loretha Jones producing.
"The Meteor Man" is rated PG and opens nationwide on Aug. 6.
