ROBERT J. MASSIE NAMED DIRECTOR OF CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS SERVICE
COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert J. Massie, currently the president and CEO of Gale Research, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Thomson Corporation, has been named director of Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), effective July 1. Massie, who will report to American Chemical Society (ACS) executive director Dr. John K. Crum, brings an extensive background in management, marketing, international business and the information industry to CAS.
As president of Gale Research, Massie was responsible for all aspects of the operations of this international company, which is a microcosm of reference and information publishing. Under his leadership, Gale Research expanded its business significantly, with substantial growth in its on-line and CD-ROM services.
Prior to joining Gale Research, Massie held several positions with Torstar, a billion dollar Canadian media company that had acquired Harlequin Enterprises, Ltd., in the early 1980s. Brought into Torstar in 1982 as vice president, corporate development and marketing, Massie eventually assumed responsibility for the overseas division of Harlequin and managed the operations of 10 companies worldwide. In 1989, he became the executive vice president of the Harlequin North American Direct Marketing Division.
Massie has also worked in the New York offices of McKinsey & Co., an international management consulting firm, and as a lawyer for Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C.
Massie's academic credits include a B.A. in French from Yale University and a combined J.D./M.B.A. degree from Columbia Law and Business Schools.
Crum said, "The ACS is pleased to have Bob Massie as the new director of CAS. He is eminently qualified for this position and is the type of leader CAS needs as it faces the numerous challenges of operating in an increasingly competitive environment. His fresh perspective will be a significant benefit to CAS."
"I am honored to have been chosen as the new director of CAS. It is a pleasure to join an organization that is highly respected by the scientists of the world and is recognized as a leader in the information industry," said Massie.
CAS interim director Dr. Clayton Callis, who has served in this capacity since September 1991, will assist in the transition.
Founded in 1907, CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, has been a pioneer and continues to be an innovative leader in electronic information retrieval and publishing. Committed to providing scientific information to the world, CAS is the publisher of "Chemical Abstracts" and jointly operates the STN International on- line service with FIZ Karlsruhe and the Japan Information Center of Science and Technology. CAS also produces a collection of chemical databases including the CA file, the CAS Registry file, CASREACT, CIN and MARPAT. In addition, CAS offers software products to make on-line searching easier (STN Express), printed products to provide current awareness in specialized areas (CA Selects and Chemical Industry notes), easy on-line access to numeric data (Materials Property Data Network) and special services to make the search for information and retrieval of documents quick and convenient (CAS Search Service and CAS Document Delivery Service).
