NEW YORK, Nov. 16 ~PRNewswire~ -- Robert G. Avis, vice chairman of A.G. Edwards, Inc., and vice chairman of the holding company's principal brokerage and investment banking subsidiary, A.G. He will serve until the Exchange's annual membership meeting in April 1993 at which time he will be eligible to stand for election to a full three-year term. He fills a vacancy caused by the death of George de B. Bell, chairman of Janney Montgomery Scott, Inc. last June.

Edwards & Sons, a firm with nearly 10,000 employees in more than 450 offices in the United States. He also serves as chairman of the A.G. Edwards Trust Company and chairman of the A.G.E. Asset Management subsidiary.

He was named to the board of the brokerage company in 1971 and the board of the holding company in 1984, and was appointed vice chairman of both five years later.
In December 1989, Avis was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Securities Industry Association. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the board of Goodwill Industries of Missouri and is a member of the Metropolitan Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater St. Louis.
