 HOT SPRINGS, Va., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert E. Allen, chairman


and chief executive officer of AT&T (NYSE: T), today was elected chairman of The Business Council. He is the third AT&T chairman to be so honored.
 Allen was elected for a one-year term and will succeed John F. Welch, Jr., chairman and CEO of General Electric Company, in January, 1993.
 Elected with Allen as Vice Chairmen were:
 -- D. Wayne Calloway, chairman and CEO, PepsiCo, Inc.
 -- H. Laurance Fuller, chairman, president and CEO,
 Amoco Corporation
 -- James R. Houghton, chairman and CEO, Corning Inc.
 -- Dennis Weatherstone, chairman and CEO,
 J.P. Morgan & Co. Incorporated
 The Washington-based Business Council was originally formed in 1933 as The Business Advisory Council for the Department of Commerce. In 1961, the group's name changed to The Business Council, and its scope was broadened to include advisory functions to all elements of the national government. Membership is limited to chief executive officers of U.S. businesses at the time of invitation.
 Members meet three times a year to discuss public policy and economic issues with top officials of government and specialists in other fields to find solutions to problems of national concern.
 Past AT&T chairmen who have chaired The Business Council include Fred Kappel in 1963-64 and John D. deButts, 1977-78.
