ROADWAY SERVICES ANNOUNCES FOURTH QUARTER AND YEAR RESULTS
AKRON, Ohio, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Roadway Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROAD) reports revenue for the year ended December 31, 1991 of $3,176,956,000 compared with revenue of $2,971,235,000 in 1990.
Net income for the year, after audit, was $127,323,000, or $3.27 per share compared with net income of $119,080,000 or $3.05 per share in 1990.
For the 16 weeks constituting the company's fourth quarter, revenue was $1,053,475,000 compared with revenue of $958,194,000 in the fourth quarter of 1990. Net income for the quarter was $51,482,000, or $1.32 per share compared with net income of $45,243,000 or $1.17 per share for the comparable period of 1990.
Fourth quarter revenue for Roadway Express, the company's largest operating subsidiary, increased 6.2 percent. The operating margin remained stable at 5.8 percent compared with the fourth quarter a year ago.
Fourth quarter tonnage per shipping day for Roadway Express was up 3.8 percent over the previous year's quarter. LTL tons, shipments weighing less than 10,000 pounds each, were up 5.2 percent and truckload tons declined 1.0 percent. There was one more shipping day in the fourth quarter of 1991 versus the final quarter of 1990.
Net freight rates for Roadway Express were 2.0 percent below those of 1990's fourth quarter, primarily attributable to the absence of a fuel surcharge during the fourth quarter of 1991. A rate increase of 4.84 percent went into effect on January 1 of this year.
Quarterly revenue for the company's other operations increased 17.0 percent, led primarily by Roadway Package System. Earnings in the fourth quarter, exclusive of Roadway Express, totaled $.74 per share compared with $.57 per share in the fourth quarter of 1990.
