ROADWAY EXPRESS OPENS NEW SERVICE TO LATIN AMERICA AND THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN

AKRON, Ohio, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Roadway Express today announced its new export service to Latin America and the Eastern Caribbean.
Beginning June 21, Roadway, a leading less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier in the United States will offer direct, weekly service to Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama and Venezuela. Fortnightly service will be provided to Argentina, Brazil and Chile. In addition, service will be provided to ten Eastern Caribbean islands including the French West Indies, Leeward/Windward Isles, and the Netherlands Antilles.
The new service will include all of Roadway's traditional customer services, such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), simplified pricing and billing, QUIKTRAK shipment tracking, and personal sales assistance from over 1,000 sales professionals in all 50 states, Canada and Mexico.
Each Latin American and Caribbean location will offer a full complement of customer services including pre-arrival notification, port drayage, de-vanning, customs brokerage, bonded warehousing and delivery.
In addition, special sales and customer service groups have been established at Roadway's major bill of lading ports (an origin point from which Roadway will rate the ocean portion of a shipment) in the United States. These experienced international transportation specialists are exclusively devoted to assisting customers' international service needs.
Roadway also offers a toll-free hotline, 800-INTL-REX, to provide information about international freight flows, sailing schedules, rates and transit times.
Roadway will use premier service, conference ocean carriers for the ocean portion of each move. Roadway has also established an agency network to serve all points in Central America, South America and the Eastern Caribbean through its 22 destination bill of lading ports.
As a "neutral" non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC), Roadway will work closely with international freight forwarders who perform documentation requirements.
Hector Garcia Ortiz, a 12-year transportation veteran with Roadway Express, was promoted to general manager - Latin America/Eastern Caribbean in 1992. Garcia stated, "This new offering will complement Roadway's other international services, including our operations in Canada and Mexico, as well as our export service to Europe and the Pacific Rim."
Garcia added, "Roadway enters this market as a large, asset-based U.S. motor carrier. We are able to offer our customers true, door-to- door service on the less-than-container load (LCL) cargo from over 58,000 North American communities to destinations in Latin America and the Eastern Caribbean."
Michael W. Wickham, president of Roadway Express, further explained, "Roadway's Latin America and Eastern Caribbean service was created to meet the need of the rapidly growing U.S. export market to these 19 countries and islands in the southern hemisphere.
"All of us at Roadway are pleased to offer this new service to shippers who need to transport LCL cargo from North America to Latin America and the Eastern Caribbean. Now they can have the traditional quality and service they have come to expect from Roadway Express in additional international markets," he concluded.
In January 1991, Roadway began export service to 21 countries in Western Europe, Great Britain and Scandinavia. In June 1992, Roadway began export service to 12 countries in North and Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Roadway now serves 55 countries on five continents with over 70 bill of lading ports.
Based in Akron, Ohio, Roadway Express is one of the nation's largest motor carriers serving all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Europe, Scandinavia, Great Britain, Guam, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and now Central America, South America and the Eastern Caribbean.
