Xbox One PS49.99 *****

If 2013's excellent rebooted Tomb Raider painted Lara Croft as a reluctant but resourceful survivor, the Xbox One-exclusive Rise Of The Tomb Raider sees her return as the adventurous hero we know so well.

This time, Lara's on an adventure to find an artefact that offers eternal life, taking on a shadowy organisation and mystical foes along the way.

It's a gorgeous game with icy mountainsides giving way to incredible jungles and shimmering, skeleton-filled tombs, packed with ancient statues.

These sights would be reason enough to explore the detailed world, but Rise Of The Tomb Raider litters its semi-open world with superb puzzles that require you to manipulate environmental features and use Lara's full arsenal of skills to overcome. You'll feel like a genius when they click into place.

As a result, the game's combat sections, although expertly handled with a new and convincing stealth system in tow, eventually feel tiresome. You'll want to rush past enemies and shootouts to find what hidden secrets the world holds, but this is a testament to the quality of game's enigmas and optional challenge tombs rather than any failing in its gunplay.

Tied up with an entertaining story that weaves seamlessly through the gameplay - with an incredible performance from latest Lara, Camilla Luddington - this may well be the best Tomb Raider game we've seen yet.

THE BEST YET: Highly entertaining
