RIKEN VITAMIN DEDICATES MAJOR NEW DISTILLED MONOGLYCERIDE PLANT IN MALAYSIA TO MEET GROWING U.S. DEMAND

 JOHOR, Malaysia, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Riken Vitamin Co. (Tokyo) today dedicated a major $22.6 million state-of-the-art distilled monoglyceride (DMG) plant, based in Johor, Malaysia, to meet growing demand for high quality vegetable-based DMGs used by the baking and food industries worldwide.
 The 3,010 square meter plant is Riken's third DMG facility and first located outside of Japan. The new plant has an annual capacity of 10,000 metric tons, and will produce Kosher-certified vegetable-based DMGs, utilizing Riken's patented technology. The plant will be operated by Rikevita (Malaysia) SDN BHD, a subsidiary of Riken.
 Headquartered in Tokyo, Riken has more than 30 years experience producing DMGs. the company estimated the world-wide market for DMGs at approximately 80,000 metric tons a year.
 Takeda U.S.A., Inc., based in Orangeburg, N.Y., is the exclusive sales representative for Riken products in America.
 Mr. Takanoshin Nagamochi, chairman of Riken, said, "We invested in the new DNG plant primarily to meet growing American demand and underscore our commitment to the U.S. market." Also representing Riken at the ceremony were Dr. Hiroshi Sone, president, and Mr. Akira Takehara, managing director.
 Mr. Yoshimasa Umemoto, chairman of Takeda Chemical Industries, Inc., the Tokyo-based parent company of Takeda U.S.A., Inc., said during the plant's dedication ceremony that "Takeda is pleased that Riken has committed considerable financial resources to build one of the industry's finest distilled monoglyceride plants." Also representing Takeda at the ceremony attended by more than 200 dignitaries from Asia, Europe and the United States, was Mr. Takatoshi Nagura, president of the Vitamin and Food Division of Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd.
 In a statement regarding the U.S. market, Mr. Hideo Yamabe, president of Takeda U.S.A., Inc. said, "Takeda is honored to represent Riken in America, where the growing demand for Riken DMGs is outpacing the estimated 10 percent annual growth rate of the market throughout North America. The new facility, producing Kosher-certified products, further enhances Riken's excellent reputation."
 Also attending the plant dedication, Gerry McKiernan, vice president of Takeda U.S.A., Inc., added, "As Americans become increasingly health conscious, we expect DMGs to continue to replace fats especially in the preparation of low fat products.
 Riken DMGs are often used by baking and food companies to replace up to 50 percent of fats in original recipes, while also improving the taste and texture of the products."
 Riken's DMGs are emulsifiers primarily used to enhance the taste and texture of food, while ensuring consistent processing. For example, DMGs help achieve uniform crumb structure and increased shelf life of baked goods. Riken DMGs are commonly used in production of white bread and a variety of cakes, as well as dairy products, including ice cream and toppings. Processed margarine, shortening and peanut butter, as well as protein products such as tofu, and starch products, including dehydrated potatoes, macaroni and spaghetti, all use Riken DMGs. In confectionery goods, Riken DMGs are used in the production of cookies, chewing gum and chocolate.
 Initial production of DMGs began at Riken's Malaysian plant on Oct. 4, 1992.
 Takeda and Riken are traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
