RIGHT START ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Right Start Inc. (NASDAQ: RTST) announced today net income of $l84,000, or $.03 a share, for the first quarter ended Aug. 25, l993, compared with $290,000, or $.05 a share, for the same period last year. Revenues for the first quarter rose 65 percent to $l5,939,000 from $9,640,000 for the same period last year.
Lenny Targon, chief executive officer, said despite record revenues for the quarter, earnings were impacted by lower than anticipated response rates to increased catalog mailings; the expense associated with gearing up for the higher expectations; and the company's investment in pilot testing the Weebok catalog. Industry-wide catalog sales were also soft this summer, Targon added.
"The performance of the company's retail units has been exceptional," said Targon. "Sales are up 50 percent at the Westlake Village store compared with the same period a year ago. The two newest retail stores, one in Laguna Hills, Calif. and the other in Rich's Department Store in Gwinnett Center, near Atlanta, Georgia, are generating profits after being opened in July l993."
The company plans to open its fifth retail store -- its first stand- alone mall unit -- in November l993, in the Stoneridge Mall, in Pleasanton, Calif., a suburb of San Francisco.
Targon said the strong revenue growth for the quarter was largely due to contributions from the company's Children's Wear Digest, which was not part of the company a year ago, and an increase in the number of Right Start catalogs mailed.
"We continue to expect revenue growth going forward as a result of the increase in the size of our house lists and our success finding new sources of names for our catalog business," said Targon. "Pre-tax margins will depend on response rates, which of course, are affected by economic conditions," Targon added. Management said it will re- evaluate the performance of the new Weebok catalog in the coming months.
