RIEDEL FILES FOR DECLARATORY JUDGMENT AGAINST USEPA

PORTLAND, Ore., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Riedel Environmental Technologies Inc. (RET) (AMEX: RIE) today announced that its subsidiary, Riedel Environmental Services (RES), has filed suit in Federal District Court in Oregon requesting a declaratory judgment against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to resolve a long-standing insurance contract dispute. RES earlier requested USEPA to meet to negotiate a settlement. On Monday, May 10, 1993, RES offered a written settlement to EPA, however, USEPA refused to meet to negotiate and instead threatened to sue RES.
RES negotiated a fixed rate contract for cleanup of hazardous waste sites with the USEPA in the mid 1980s which included charges for pollution liability insurance coverage in compliance with government laws and regulations. In 1989, the EPA sought to deny these insurance charges and collect monies already paid to the company under the terms of the contract.
RES maintains that all dealings with the USEPA under this contract have been proper and in full compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. RES has made several settlement offers to the USEPA in an effort to resolve this matter out of court. On Monday, May 10, 1993, RES offered the government a substantial settlement but received word from the Department of Justice that the EPA both declined the company's offer and refused to meet to negotiate.
Arthur A. Riedel, RET chairman and chief executive officer, stated, "This matter is a contract dispute and should be resolved at the negotiating table. We are dismayed that the EPA refuses to meet to discuss a resolution. Because of EPA's unwillingness to meet, we have no choice but to file suit against the EPA to finally resolve this matter. It is important to note that RES continues to perform award- winning environmental cleanup work for the federal government."
