RICOH DEVELOPS COPIER FORGERY DETECTION DEVICE; COMPACT, EASY-TO-USE ON-THE-SPOT FORGERY DETECTION

WEST CALDWELL, N.J., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Ricoh Corporation has developed a prototype anti-forgery device designed to detect forgeries of paper negotiables, such as counterfeit money, securities, prescriptions, gift certificates, tickets, stamps, etc., made on virtually any make or model dry toner color or black and white photocopier. The device, which measures only 4" x 4" x 2", exploits a fundamental property of the powdered resin deposited by photocopiers on paper to form images, known as toner, to melt at high temperatures.
The compact new portable device is simple to operate, making it suitable for on-the-spot forgery detection in a wide variety of point-of-transaction situations. All a user needs to do to operate the device, is place the suspect negotiable onto a heated surface on the device and cover the negotiable with a small cylindrical document holder. After three seconds, a light will indicate that the test is complete. If the suspect document is a forgery, the holder will detect melting toner and attach a warning seal. If the negotiable is authentic, it will not be affected.
The growing number of high-performance, full-color copiers has resulted in an increase in the illegal reproduction of currency and other negotiables. To date, there is no single device marketed capable of detecting all copier forgeries. A release date for the new Ricoh product has not yet been announced.
Ricoh Corporation, a U.S. company headquartered in West Caldwell, is a diversified office equipment and electronics firm with sales of nearly $1 billion annually. Ricoh is a leading supplier of copiers, facsimiles and multi-functional document systems that are sold both directly and through dealers. The company also markets scanners, printers and optical and magnetic storage devices, as well as photographic equipment.
