RICOH'S NEW INTELLIGENT FACSIMILE SYSTEM COMPATIBLE WITH MICROSOFT INTEGRATED OFFICE ARCHITECTURE

NEW YORK, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Ricoh Corporation today previewed an intelligent facsimile system (IFS) that combines walk-up and PC fax, laser printer and scanner functions. A compact desktop unit that supports Microsoft At Work(TM) integrated office architecture, the RICOH IFS will be available in the first quarter of 1994.
"Ricoh has a commitment to office integration," said Eric L. Steenburgh, president and COO, Ricoh Corporation. "Working with Microsoft's new architecture gave us an opportunity to contribute our expertise in equipment design and telecommunications to this innovative software solution."
The RICOH IFS improves productivity and communications while reducing equipment and space requirements. Its advanced features can be accessed through the terminal's user-friendly touch screen or from any connected PC. A graphical user interface optimizes ease of use.
The IFS offers fully G3 compatible walk-up plain paper fax and PC fax capabilities through a 14.4 kbps fax modem. It can be used as a standalone fax machine, or when connected to a local area network or PC via a serial/parallel interface, it provides a gateway for transmitting documents and files.
The IFS permits fax data and files to be exchanged between PCs over remotely connected wide area networks -- or between IFS terminals -- using an enhanced G3 compatible protocol. Security features let users encrypt documents, authenticate the recipient and sender before a message is delivered or enclose a digital signature for verification.
"In" and "Out" mailboxes allow users to send information directly from their PCs. Received messages are routed directly to the recipient's subaddress. Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) routing is also available.
The RICOH IFS provides 300 dots-per-inch (dpi) 10 ppm laser printing. Superior print quality and low transmission cost are achieved through Microsoft Rendering Printing technology which requires no resident fonts.
Users running Windows can specify the RICOH IFS as their current printer. Print jobs will be transmitted to the resident queue. For MS- DOS users, optional printer emulations will be available in the future.
A Windows-based application also allows documents to be scanned into any connected PC via the IFS. The scanner function is capable of 64- level halftone processing. Bit-mapped scanned images can be downloaded to Windows or MS-DOS applications and saved in TIFF, PCX or DCX file formats.
Memory is supplied by a standard 80MB hard disk. Two RS232C serial ports, a Centronics parallel port and an optional LAN interface provide PC connectivity.
Ricoh Corporation, a U.S. company headquartered in West Caldwell, N.J., is a diversified office equipment and electronics firm with sales of nearly $1 billion annually. Ricoh is a leading supplier of copiers, facsimiles and multi-functional document systems that are sold both directly and through dealers. The company also markets scanners, printers and optical and magnetic storage devices, as well as photographic equipment.
