 RICHARD W. POGUE RECEIVES
 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP AWARD
CLEVELAND, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Richard W. Pogue, managing partner of the international law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue, and chairman of the Greater Cleveland Growth Association, has become the first recipient of the National Council for Urban Economic Development (CUED) Economic Development Leadership Award. This prestigious national award is presented to an individual demonstrating unparalleled commitment to the economic development and betterment of his or her community.
"Dick Pogue exemplifies the spirit of cooperation and commitment that brought this area back from the brink of disaster," says Cleveland Mayor Michael R. White. "His impact on the entire Northeast Ohio area will be felt for decades to come."
CUED cited Pogue's more than 30 years of work in the public and private sectors in Greater Cleveland, serving as the guiding force for many of the major initiatives which led to Cleveland's rebirth as the "Comeback City." For example:
-- As chairman of the Rand Study, Cleveland's benchmark for development plans in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Pogue helped persuade business and community leaders to adopt a plan to understand and leverage regional economic data for the revitalization of Greater Cleveland.
-- As a member of the Mayor's Operations Improvement Task Force, he participated with many others in a program to rebuild local government and restore private sector confidence, paving the way for Cleveland's dramatic renaissance.
-- As a founding member and later chairman of the Greater Cleveland Roundtable, a broad-based community coalition dedicated to race relations and human relations, he worked to ensure the fair treatment and full participation of all Greater Clevelanders.
-- As a founding supporter of the Cleveland Initiative for Education, a national model for corporate support of public education, he sought to provide for the future of area children.
-- He chaired the Cleveland-area campaigns for the United Negro College Fund and the United Way, both of which went over the goal.
-- As chairman of the Cleveland Foundation, America's first community foundation, he assured the proper channeling and creative use of limited community resources and launched major initiatives in public education, neighborhoods and lakefront development.
-- As a board member of the New Cleveland Campaign, and one of the creators of the innovative Marketing Partnership, he helped build consensus of seven diverse community organizations behind a common, strategic marketing plan to promote the area's strengths as a business and visitor destination center.
-- As a board member and chairman of the Greater Cleveland Growth Association, America's largest chamber of commerce, he has provided exemplary innovation, leadership and vision in the area of economic development.
Pogue was presented with the Leadership Award on April 8 at CUED's annual conference in Washington, D.C. Victor Grgas, CUED president, presented the award.
