RHONE-POULENC ADJUSTS ITS 1992 FORECASTS

 RHONE-POULENC ADJUSTS ITS 1992 FORECASTS
PARIS, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- At the time of the publication of

its 1992 first half results, the Rhone-Poulenc Group (NYSE: PRRrC, RPPrA, RPU, RPWS) confirmed its estimate of an increase in operating income by "approximately 20 percent" for the year. Although the July results showed an improvement in line with the first six months of the year, the first indications of the August results, as well as an analysis of the latest market information concerning our products and the consequences of the sudden drop in the value of the American dollar below FF4.80 leads Rhone-Poulenc today to adjust its earlier estimation for 1992 (despite the Health sector maintaining its target results). The group has decided to make this information immediately known to the market.
It turns out that the chemical intermediates sales have been particularly hit due to a slow down in demand and a significant drop in prices recorded in the European markets following the strong depreciation in the value of the dollar.
Moreover, the recent intensification of the political crisis in Brazil has led to a serious slow down in the Brazilian economy which was reflected in the August results of our Brazilian subsidiary. The effect is more notable as this month is traditionally an important month, both in terms of sales and income. The third quarter results are likely to be strongly affected by all of these factors.
Taking into account these uncertainties, the increases in 1992 operating income, is now expected to be between +10 percent and +15 percent as compared to 1991 and not "approximately 20 percent" as previously estimated.
