RHONE-POULENC: INACCURATE DATA USED BY CITIZEN ACTION IN TOXIC WASTE REPORT

PRINCETON, N.J., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to a report issued today by Citizen Action, Rhone-Poulenc Inc. (NYSE: RP) has issued the following statement:
The amount of toxic waste attributed to Rhone-Poulenc in today's Citizen Action report incorrectly includes 1.2 billion pounds of sulfuric acid that is recycled by Rhone-Poulenc for refinery customers. This information should not have been included as toxic waste generated by the company.
Sulfuric acid is used by refineries to improve the octane rating in gasoline. During the process of producing gasoline, the sulfuric acid becomes contaminated. This "spent" sulfuric acid is then sent to one of six Rhone-Poulenc plants where the spent sulfuric acid is purified by removing the contaminants. This recycled sulfuric acid is then returned to the refinery for reuse. The process is of great benefit to the environment because it eliminates the disposal of over a billion pounds of material that would otherwise be discarded.
Three Rhone-Poulenc plants, Baton Rouge, Houston and Baytown, incorrectly reported data related to regeneration, or recycling, of sulfuric acid in a report submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in July 1992. The 1.2 billion pound figure was based on a misunderstanding of new reporting requirements which went into effect that year. When the error was discovered, the data was reviewed with EPA. Corrected reports were filed in June 1993.
In reality, Rhone-Poulenc has reduced its toxic emissions to air, water and land by more than 60 percent since 1987 when reporting first began. This number is the key measure to use in evaluating a company's pollution prevention results.
Rhone-Poulenc Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of Rhone-Poulenc S.A., France's leading chemical and pharmaceutical company. With 56 manufacturing facilities across the U.S., Rhone-Poulenc manufactures agricultural products, and basic and specialty chemicals.
