RG&E OFFERS RETIREMENT ENHANCEMENT

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E) (NYSE: RGS) today announced to its employees that it is offering a retirement enhancement program that makes nearly 150 of its 2,631 employees eligible for voluntary early retirement. The program, approved today by the company's board of directors, offers incentives for employees who will be at least 59 years of age by Dec. 31, 1993.
Under the terms of the program, eligible employees whose age plus years of service total at least 90 will receive full retirement benefits this year if they decide to accept the offer. Added to that, those opting for the program will receive a monthly retirement supplement of $800 beginning Dec. 1, 1993, for a limited period of time. Eligible employees have until Nov. 1, 1993 to decide whether or not to participate in the program.
In a personal letter to all employees, RG&E Chairman of the Board, President and CEO Roger W. Kober explains the program and notes that the decision was based on "continuing efforts to maintain and improve RG&E's competitive position." These efforts are made in addition to RG&E's ongoing cost-saving measures that have made its residential electric rates the lowest among New York State taxpaying power companies.
It is anticipated that the net, pre-tax cost savings through 1997 would amount to about $7.2 million. Initial program costs of about $4.9 million before savings, or around nine cents per share, would be charged against earnings this year in a one-time write-off.
