RF MICRO DEVICES AND TRW ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT TO BRING MILITARY TECHNOLOGY TO AMERICAN CONSUMERS; RADIO FREQUENCY INTEGRATED CIRCUIT USED IN PHONE

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- RF Micro Devices today signed an agreement with TRW that will permit RF Micro Devices to utilize state- of-the-art military technology for its new line of radio frequency integrated circuits used in consumer and commercial wireless applications.
AT&T, one of RF Micro Devices' customers, will begin offering an extended range digital cordless telephone made with RF Micro Devices' new chip fabricated by TRW.
The agreement signed today will allow RF Micro Devices to apply TRW's heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology to produce a family of integrated circuits. Included in this family is a chip that can be used to make smaller, lighter wireless electronics products that operate at extended ranges using a single power supply. Wireless home security systems, wireless local area networks and cordless telephones, all designed with this new chip, will soon be available to U.S. consumers.
"RF Micro Devices' chip uses very little battery power to transmit signals," explained William Pratt, founder, chairman of the board and chief technical officer of RF Micro Devices.
This technology was originally developed by TRW for military applications with assistance from the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).
"This will be the next generation of cordless telephones. Callers will be able to make and receive calls up to four times the range of conventional cordless phones while maintaining sound clarity and privacy," said O.J. (Ben) Benjamin, director of wireless terminal research and development at AT&T.
RF Micro Devices, located in Greensboro, N.C., is emerging as the leading supplier of radio frequency integrated circuits for wireless applications.
