CHARLESTON, W.Va., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Marshall T. Reynolds, chairman of Banc One West Virginia Corporation (formerly Key Centurion Bancshares, Inc.) today announced to the board of directors that he is stepping down as chairman to concentrate his energies on Champion Industries (NASDAQ: CHMP), the Huntington, W.Va., based company which he took public in January 1993, and, since that time, has acquired four new subsidiaries including ones in Jackson, Miss.; Baton Rouge, La.; Florence, S.C.; and Marietta, Ohio. The board named A. Michael Perry chairman and chief executive officer.
Reynolds has long been a driving force of banking growth and development in West Virginia, the company said. Reynolds and Perry had shared the vision of forming a bank holding company that would serve the state's economic development goals and, in 1982, together with other associates, formed Key Bancshares of West Virginia, Inc., with beginning assets of $325 million. In 1985, Centurion Bancorp, Inc. of Charleston merged with Key to form Key Centurion Bancshares, Inc., West Virginia's first billion-dollar banking organization with Reynolds as chairman of Key Centurion and Perry as president.
Under Reynolds' leadership, 19 banks joined forces to provide financial services in 58 offices throughout West Virginia and eastern Kentucky.
"Marshall is a true leader. His determination for us to be the leading financial organization in our state as well as his ability to attract strong associates, propelled our organization over the last decade. Our assets grew to surpass three billion dollars and employment grew to more than 1,800. That same determination and leadership will, in my opinion, result in similar growth and success for Champion Industries. This organization, our communities and our state owe a great deal of gratitude to Marshall for his strong belief that West Virginia and its citizens deserved the same financial advantages and opportunities as everyone else," said Perry.
"Association with this company has been a real source of pride and accomplishment for me as well as for the many others who worked together as a strong team. We have achieved the many goals we set and, by doing so, we helped to enrich the lives of West Virginians. Now it's time for me to focus on pursuing new goals with Champion Industries. Different types of organizations, by nature of the type of business, provide different opportunities; however, my interest continues to be creating net worth for shareholders and building careers for employees with higher plateaus of responsibility and rewards," Reynolds said.
On May 3, 1993, Key Centurion Bancshares, Inc. became Banc One West Virginia Corporation, and on Sept. 13, 1993, the affiliated banks throughout West Virginia and eastern Kentucky began operating under the Bank One name.
