REYNOLDS METALS ESTABLISHES RECORD RECYCLING TOTALS IN 1992

RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Reynolds Metals Company (NYSE: RLM) today reported that during 1992 it recycled a record 560 million pounds of consumer-generated aluminum, an increase of more than 5 percent over its 1991 collection totals.
The metal recycled from consumer-generated sources included a record 11.7 billion all-aluminum beverage cans and came primarily through Reynolds Aluminum Recycling Company (RARCO), the Recycling Division of Reynolds Metals.
"These records are significant since they occurred during a sluggish economic period," said Paul S. Hayden, general manager of the Recycling Division and president of RARCO. "But it proves that environmental consciousness among consumers in the area of recycling continues to grow, and that there is continued demand for secondary aluminum products by commercial users and fabricators, especially in the beverage container industry.
"The 11.7 billion cans recycled are equal to more than 100 percent of the cans Reynolds produced last year," Hayden added.
Also included in the record totals were more than 141 million pounds of non-can aluminum.
"As more and more aluminum is utilized in automobiles, appliances, building products, packaging items, foil and foil products and other household goods, these metal sources will continue to increase within our recycling stream and lessen to an even greater degree the burden associated with our country's solid waste problem," Hayden said.
Consumers were paid almost $135 million for recycling with Reynolds during 1992, bringing the total paid to recyclers since the inception of the Reynolds consumer recycling business to more than $1.6 billion.
"This is all new money injected back into the economy for something that otherwise would have wound up in the solid waste stream," Hayden noted. "And this doesn't even take into account the money that cities, counties and states saved by not placing the material into a landfill."
Reynolds also recycles aluminum gathered by municipalities through the ever-increasing curbside and drop-off collection systems which offer even more opportunities to consumers who wish to recycle.
Reynolds, which celebrates its 25th year of consumer recycling in 1993, purchases aluminum through its network of almost 700 company- operated recycling centers nationwide and by providing a market for thousands of independent recycling operations.
"The overall recycling rate for aluminum cans far exceeds that of any other beverage, food or packaging container," Hayden said.
"With the increased emphasis on the recyclability of many other aluminum products available to consumers, we see aluminum recycling continuing to have a dramatic leadership impact on the entire recycling industry," he said.
